In Summary

Kenya’s IPOA has deployed a Rapid Response Team to investigate the fatal shooting of 21-year-old student Sheril Adhiambo in Nairobi’s Huruma area, aiming to establish accountability and reassure the public.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has deployed a Rapid Response Team to investigate the fatal shooting of 21-year-old student Sheril Adhiambo in Nairobi’s Huruma area.

The incident allegedly occurred during a police chase of robbery suspects on February 7, 2026. IPOA pledges a thorough, impartial probe to establish accountability.

According to a statement issued on February 9, 2026, IPOA’s Nairobi Regional Office swiftly deployed a Rapid Response Team on Sunday, February 8, 2026, to begin inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

Investigators are actively engaged in collecting evidence from the scene, interviewing witnesses, and analysing samples and exhibits relevant to the case.

The goal is to establish a clear account of the events leading to the fatal shooting and to inform subsequent recommendations to relevant agencies.

Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Vice Chairperson of IPOA, extended condolences to the bereaved family, emphasizing the authority’s dedication to justice.

“IPOA extends its condolences to the family of Sheril Adhiambo, calls for calm, and assures the public and the bereaved family of its commitment to conducting independent, impartial, and thorough investigations to establish culpability and ensure accountability,” she stated.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority, mandated to oversee police conduct and uphold public interest in policing, has reiterated its resolve to ensure that justice is served through transparent investigations.

The institution's involvement signals a critical step towards accountability in cases involving alleged police excesses or misconduct.

The incident has generated public concern, with many calling for justice and assurances that law enforcement agencies uphold human rights standards during operations.

The IPOA’s probe seeks to provide an authoritative and objective account of the events, countering misinformation and delivering clarity.

As investigations continue, IPOA has urged the public to remain calm and to allow the inquiry process to unfold without interference.

The authority has also encouraged any witnesses or persons with information relevant to the case to come forward, assisting in the pursuit of justice.

The shooting occurred against a backdrop of heightened sensitivity around police use of force in Kenya, where calls for police reforms and enhanced oversight mechanisms have been intensifying.

IPOA’s role is pivotal in responding to these calls by ensuring transparency and accountability.

The Nairobi Regional Rapid Response Team, comprised of experienced investigators, will submit findings to IPOA’s leadership, who will then make recommendations to the appropriate state agencies, which may include the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), or other relevant bodies.

The authority’s press release included contact details for queries and further communication, demonstrating IPOA’s openness to engagement with the public and media.

“For queries, please call 020 4906000 or email [email protected],” the statement concluded.

IPOA’s intervention comes at a critical time as Kenya seeks to balance effective policing with respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The outcome of this investigation may have significant implications for police conduct policies and public confidence in law enforcement.

The Authority remains committed to guarding public interest in policing and ensuring that all incidents involving loss of life in police operations are scrutinized with the utmost seriousness and transparency.
