Police intensify rescue operations as flood death toll rises to 71

The police have also appealed to the public to report emergencies through designated channels, including toll-free numbers and local police stations, to ensure timely intervention.

The National Police Service has intensified nationwide search and rescue operations following devastating floods that have claimed at least 71 lives across the country.
In a press statement issued from its headquarters, the agency said it is working in collaboration with multiple partners to respond to the crisis triggered by heavy downpours in recent days.

“The National Police Service (NPS), in collaboration with all relevant partners, has continued to undertake arduous search and rescue operations across the country,” the statement read, noting that the efforts were aimed at addressing the impact of sudden flash floods.

According to the update, the number of fatalities has risen sharply, with Nairobi emerging as the hardest-hit region, recording 36 deaths.

The Eastern Region has reported an additional fatality, bringing its total to 19, while the Coast region recorded one more death, raising its tally to three.

The Nyanza Region has recorded four fatalities, while Rift Valley accounts for eight deaths.

Authorities say the floods have also caused widespread destruction of property and displacement of thousands of families.

“The floods have swept through several areas with force, destroying homes, displacing approximately 2,622 families, and causing widespread destruction of infrastructure and property,” the statement said.

The ongoing rains continue to pose a threat, with the police urging members of the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and other government agencies.

“With rains projected to continue across the country, we urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution and vigilance, and to strictly adhere to updates and safety advisories,” the police added.

Emergency response teams, including police officers and volunteers, have been deployed to affected areas to assist in evacuations and provide support to victims.

The service commended responders for their efforts, highlighting their dedication in the face of the unfolding disaster.

“We commend all responders, volunteers, and partners for their swift and selfless actions. A high-level emergency response team from the NPS remains on high alert and is actively deployed on the ground,” NPS said.

The police have also appealed to the public to report emergencies through designated channels, including toll-free numbers and local police stations, to ensure timely intervention.

As the country grapples with the effects of the floods, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that the humanitarian impact could worsen if the rains persist.
