Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a brother, friend, and confidant who dedicated his life to the service of Africa.
In his message of condolence during Raila’s burial ceremony at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, Obasanjo praised the late ODM leader for his enduring sense of humour and unwavering commitment to the continent’s democratic ideals.
“One thing I liked about Raila is his sense of humour. No matter how serious the situation may be, you can be sure that Raila will turn the tension into something to laugh about,” Obasanjo said.
The former Nigerian leader said Raila’s optimism and ability to find light in difficult moments were traits that endeared him to many across Africa.
He described him as a leader who inspired hope and unity wherever he went.
“I have lost a brother, a friend, a confidant, a co-worker in the vineyard of Africa,” Obasanjo said.
“Sleep in the bosom of your Creator. Adieu, Raila Odinga.”
Obasanjo and Raila shared a long friendship rooted in their shared passion for good governance and the advancement of democracy in Africa.
Both men were outspoken reformists who advocated for peace, justice, and the empowerment of African nations.
Raila’s funeral brought together leaders from across the continent who hailed his lifelong contribution to democracy and regional stability.
Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s second Prime Minister and was a veteran opposition figure, will be laid to rest at his home in Bondo after days of national mourning.
His legacy as a champion of democracy, justice, and African unity continues to draw tributes from leaders around the world.
Raila died in India on October 15, 2025, after suffering a cardiac arrest.
He was undergoing treatment in the country.
