The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a planned maintenance exercise that will temporarily suspend access to its iTax platform, affecting all taxpayers and stakeholders.
In a notice released on Friday, December 5, the agency said the iTax system will be offline for four hours during the weekend to allow for essential system updates. Maintenance is set to begin at 8 pm on Friday, December 5, 2025, and will end at 12 am on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
During this period, users will be unable to access iTax for any transactions or tax-related services. "Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted," the notice stated, expressing the authority’s apologies to taxpayers who rely on the platform for compliance.
KRA said the maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to modernize its digital systems and improve service delivery for taxpayers across the country.
Kenya has been steadily advancing its digital revenue collection and border management systems in recent years. One of the latest milestones is the launch of the paperless eCUSTOMS platform, which aims to simplify cross-border trade and improve operational efficiency.
The eCUSTOMS app, launched on Monday, November 24, at the Busia One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) on the Kenya-Uganda border, is the result of a collaboration between KRA, the British High Commission, and TradeMark Africa. It allows traders, transporters, and passengers to complete customs declarations faster and more efficiently.
The British High Commission noted that the platform is part of a 15-year partnership focused on boosting trade across Kenya's borders. The system is expected to cut clearance times, enhance transparency, and ensure compliance with regional customs regulations.
For truck operators, the platform is projected to reduce cumulative waiting time by around 1,200 hours daily at Busia, saving roughly an hour per truck. Small traders can save about Ksh 750 per customs declaration, which can add up for those who cross the border multiple times a day.
The initiative has been described as a major step forward for Kenya and the East African region, placing the country at the forefront of modern and secure border management while promoting smoother trade operations.
