Pathologists said the injuries were caused by blunt force trauma, resulting in extensive damage to the chest, including a perforated heart, which was identified as the primary cause of death.

Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo died from severe chest crush injuries sustained in a road crash, an autopsy has revealed.

Pathologists said the injuries were caused by blunt force trauma, resulting in extensive damage to the chest, including a perforated heart, which was identified as the primary cause of death.

The findings were made public on Wednesday, December 17, by government pathologist Johansen Oduor together with family-appointed pathologists at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, where the postmortem was conducted.

The examination showed that Jirongo also suffered serious injuries to the abdomen, multiple rib fractures and significant bleeding into the chest cavity, with the crash injuries extending into the abdominal area. In addition, pathologists documented two fractures on his right hand and fractures on both lower limbs.

“There were two fractures in the right hand, as well as fractures on both limbs. The chest sustained multiple rib fractures, perforation of the heart, extensive chest injuries, bleeding in the chest cavity, and crush injuries extending into the abdomen,” the report stated in part.

Family doctor Martin Wanyoike said the injuries were unsurvivable. “As a heart doctor, I witnessed a very severe injury to the heart, and those injuries are not compatible with life. We are sincerely sorry to the family,” Wanyoike said.

The former MP died on December 13,2025  in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway after his vehicle collided with a 45-seater passenger bus, killing him instantly.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday confirmed that it has obtained CCTV footage from a petrol station near the scene in Naivasha and has re-summoned the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus involved for further questioning.

According to investigators, the footage shows Jirongo driving into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at about 2:18:40am on December 13. He briefly stopped at the station exit before making a right turn to head back towards Nairobi, moments before a PSV bus rammed into his vehicle at around 2:19 am.

The impact pushed Jirongo’s vehicle roughly 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away. Detectives said they are also reviewing Jirongo’s movements earlier that night, including recording statements from people he interacted with, among them those present at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
