Acting on intelligence about planned drug exchanges, officers seized narcotics, cash, mobile phones, and foreign passports. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider trafficking network and trace additional suspects.

DCI detectives on Monday arrested two suspects during a coordinated anti-narcotics operation spanning Machakos and Kiambu counties.

Acting on intelligence about planned drug exchanges, officers seized narcotics, cash, mobile phones, and foreign passports. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the wider trafficking network and trace additional suspects.

The operation, conducted by the DCI’s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in collaboration with the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), initially focused on a planned narcotics exchange in Syokimau, Machakos County.

Based on real-time information from covert sources, the operation was redirected to Ruaka, Kiambu County, where the team executed a search at a residential property within Mbuti Apartment.

The raid led to the recovery of a significant cache of evidence. Authorities seized pellets and packages suspected to contain narcotic drugs, alongside digital weighing scales, multiple mobile phones, foreign passports, and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.

The suspects arrested during the operation have been identified as Okeke Ikechukwu, a Nigerian national, and Alex Opondo, a Kenyan national.

Following their arrest, both were escorted to Ruaraka and Pangani Police Stations for processing.

All exhibits recovered during the raid have been secured and are undergoing forensic analysis to determine the type and quantity of narcotics involved.

The DCI has indicated that the arrests mark only the initial phase of a broader investigation.

Officers continue to trace additional suspects linked to the network with the objective of dismantling the entire trafficking operation.

“Investigations are ongoing, and we remain committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in narcotics trafficking are brought to justice,” the agency stated.

The Anti-Narcotics Unit has been at the forefront of Kenya’s efforts to curb the illegal drug trade, often coordinating with specialized units such as the Transnational Organised Crime Unit to address operations with both local and cross-border dimensions.

The success of this operation highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing and the role of covert sources in identifying and disrupting criminal networks.

Officials have also urged the public to assist in combating drug trafficking by reporting suspicious activities.

Citizens can provide anonymous tips through the DCI’s toll-free line, 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000. The agency reassured the public that anonymity will be maintained and encouraged vigilance.

The DCI’s latest operation reflects ongoing concerns over the growing sophistication of narcotics trafficking networks in Kenya, particularly those involving foreign nationals.

Authorities note that these networks often operate across multiple counties and exploit gaps in law enforcement coordination.

By targeting both local and foreign suspects, the DCI aims to address not only the immediate flow of illegal drugs but also the larger structural operations that enable trafficking.

Experts said intelligence-led raids, such as the one in Ruaka, are crucial in disrupting operations before they escalate, preventing large-scale distribution of narcotics in urban and peri-urban areas.

By combining surveillance, informant reports, and coordinated action across counties, Kenyan law enforcement agencies are strengthening their ability to tackle organized crime.

Okeke and Opondo are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, where charges related to possession and trafficking of narcotics will be formally presented.

The outcome of their trial could provide insight into the scope of the network and any additional persons involved.

As the investigation unfolds, the DCI has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling organized drug networks and safeguarding communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.

Authorities emphasize that intelligence-led operations, community collaboration, and rigorous forensic analysis remain central to Kenya’s fight against illegal drugs.

This latest arrest reaffirms Kenya’s proactive approach to combating drug trafficking while sending a clear message that the law will pursue both local and international actors involved in narcotics distribution.
