At least 88 people have died and 2,690 families displaced as torrential rains trigger widespread flooding and landslides across Kenya, according to the latest report by the National Police Service, with a deadly incident in Kilungu, Makueni County claiming the lives of two children.
Several roads and bridges have been destroyed, hampering rescue and relief operations as multi-agency teams remain on high alert.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Police Service said “several areas are experiencing severe flooding, landslides, and other risks associated with heavy rain, leaving communities in distress and critical infrastructure heavily affected.”
The situation has worsened as heavy downpours continue across the country, cutting off access to affected regions and complicating emergency response efforts.
The Service confirmed that in Kilungu Sub-County, a landslide “tragically claimed the lives of two children and left four others injured,” underscoring the growing danger posed by the ongoing rains.
As of March 24, 2026, authorities reported that fatalities linked to the floods had risen to 88, while thousands of displaced families are currently sheltering in temporary evacuation centres.
The statement further noted that “the ongoing heavy downpours have also rendered numerous roads impassable and caused significant damage to several bridges,” severely limiting access for rescue teams and humanitarian assistance.
Multi-agency response teams have since been deployed and remain on high alert, conducting search and rescue operations while working to restore access to critical infrastructure.
Authorities said efforts are ongoing to provide relief assistance to affected communities even as the Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor weather patterns and issue timely updates.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety advisories. “They are advised not to cross flooded rivers, to avoid driving through moving water, and to relocate promptly from high-risk areas when instructed to do so,” the statement read.
In case of emergencies, the National Police Service has encouraged citizens to seek help through emergency lines, including 999 and 911, or report incidents anonymously via the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline.
