NTSA issues road safety alert as heavy rains hit country

Kenya’s NTSA has issued a rainy season road safety alert, warning of reduced visibility and slippery roads amid heavy rains and fog, and urging motorists and pedestrians to take extra precautions.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised concern over rising dangers on the roads as heavy rains and fog continue to affect different parts of the country, urging all road users to remain alert and take extra care to avoid accidents.

In a statement released on Thursday, the authority warned that poor weather conditions are already making roads unsafe, with reduced visibility and slippery surfaces increasing the chances of crashes. “the ongoing rainfall and foggy conditions in some areas are significantly increasing road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.”

The agency called on motorists, pedestrians, and passengers to be cautious at all times, noting that safety on the roads depends on collective responsibility. Drivers, in particular, have been advised to adjust their habits to suit wet conditions, including maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and reducing speed since stopping fully can be harder on wet roads.

Motorists have also been asked to switch on headlights whenever it rains to improve visibility for other road users. In addition, they are encouraged to use windshield wipers to keep their view clear and to quickly remove stalled vehicles from the road to avoid causing further danger.

The authority issued a strong warning against attempting to cross flooded sections of roads, stressing that such decisions can easily lead to serious harm for both drivers and passengers.

Pedestrians have not been left out in the advisory, with NTSA urging them to use designated crossing points to reduce exposure to risk. Passengers were also encouraged to play an active role in their safety by speaking up if they feel a driver is putting them in danger.

The authority ended its message with a call for unity among all road users. “Let us all work together to make our roads safer,” NTSA said.

The warning comes as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall across the country between March 24 and March 30, 2026, although the intensity is expected to ease as the week goes on.

According to the forecast, areas in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western regions will experience high daytime temperatures above 30°C, while colder nights dropping below 10°C are expected in the Central Highlands and regions near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

With the rains set to persist, the NTSA advisory serves as a reminder for everyone using the roads to stay careful and make safety a priority during this period.
