The incident has drawn attention in sporting and diplomatic circles, particularly given Artan’s rising profile in African football officiating and his recognition as CAF Referee of the Year 2025.

The Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed deep regret following a decision by the United States authorities to deny entry to internationally recognised Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a move that has prompted diplomatic engagement and strong national support for the official.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Mogadishu on 10 June 2026, the government said it was disappointed by the outcome despite efforts to intervene diplomatically on behalf of the CAF Referee of the Year 2025.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its deep regret over the decision by the authorities of the United States of America to deny entry to Somali international referee Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan,” the statement read.

Artan, described by the ministry as “Somalia’s most accomplished sporting figure and a source of immense national pride,” has built a reputation as one of the country’s leading sports officials, earning continental recognition through his work in African football.

The statement confirmed that Somali authorities had made formal efforts to support his travel arrangements and engage relevant counterparts, though these efforts did not yield a positive result.

“The Federal Government of Somalia undertook diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in support of Mr. Artan’s travel. Regrettably, these efforts did not result in a favourable outcome,” the ministry said.

Despite the setback, the government moved to emphasise its continued pride in Artan’s achievements and his role as a national inspiration.

According to the statement, “The Government of Somalia remains immensely proud of Mr. Artan’s achievements and contributions. His success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international excellence.”

The press release also noted that Artan had already returned to Somalia and would continue with his professional duties.

“Mr. Artan has safely returned home and will continue to carry out his national and international responsibilities with the same dedication and professionalism that have defined his career,” it stated.

Somalia’s foreign ministry further acknowledged messages of solidarity received during the period, extending appreciation to international partners and sporting bodies.

“The Ministry also extends its sincere appreciation to all brotherly countries, individuals, institutions, sporting bodies, and well-wishers who expressed solidarity and support during this period,” the statement said.

While the government did not provide detailed reasons for the US decision, it indicated that it would continue diplomatic engagement to seek clarification and protect the rights of its citizens abroad.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia will continue engaging with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding this matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens,” it added.

The statement concluded with a message of support for the referee, welcoming him back to the country and celebrating his achievements.

“Welcome home, Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements,” it said.

The incident has drawn attention in sporting and diplomatic circles, particularly given Artan’s rising profile in African football officiating and his recognition as CAF Referee of the Year 2025.
