Heavy rainfall has again wreaked havoc across parts of Nairobi, with extreme flooding reported in several areas including Parklands, the CBD, Ngong Road (Ngando area), Lower Kabete, Kibera, Kilimani, South B, Kawangware, Lang’ata, Lavington, Eastleigh and Riruta.
Major traffic disruptions have also been reported on Saturday along the Expressway (Museum Hill exit), Limuru Road, Bunyala Road, Lusaka Road and parts of the CBD.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, both the Nairobi and Ngong rivers have overflowed, causing riverine flooding. The agency said its teams are in various areas rescuing stranded persons.
“So far, 11 people have been rescued from a marooned matatu along Bunyala Road, and two children were rescued from a flooded house in Kilimani,” the Kenya Red Cross said.
Online videos shared by users show motorists trying to pull vehicles stuck in flood waters while pedestrians try to wade through flooded sections of roads.
This comes as at least 62 people have died following heavy rains and flooding reported across several parts of the country, with Nairobi recording the highest number of fatalities, according to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
In an update issued on March 13, 2026, the ministry said the deaths include 46 men, eight women and eight children, as authorities continue rescue, recovery and emergency response operations in affected regions.
“Nairobi has the highest number of deaths at 33,” the ministry said in a statement.
The capital has experienced widespread flooding following days of intense rainfall that have submerged roads, homes and businesses, leaving many residents displaced and emergency teams responding to multiple incidents.
Beyond Nairobi, the Eastern Region has recorded the second-highest number of fatalities with 17 deaths, followed by the Rift Valley Region with seven.
The ministry said the Nyanza Region and the Coast Region have each reported two deaths, while the Central Region has recorded one fatality.
“Sixty-two fatalities have been recorded so far, including 46 men, eight women and eight children,” the ministry said.
Authorities said emergency response teams have been deployed in several counties to assist affected communities, conduct rescue operations and support displaced families.
Officials warned that the death toll could rise as search operations continue in areas where homes were swept away or residents remain missing following flash floods.
