As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, UDA-affiliated leaders have launched a widespread voter registration campaign, urging citizens, especially the youth, to secure their place on the voters roll and ensure their voices count in shaping future leadership.
The campaign, spearheaded by nominated Senators Tabitha Mutinda and Hamida Kibwa together with Nairobi South Ward Representative Waithera Chege, is designed to reach areas with low registration numbers and educate young Kenyans on their electoral power.
Speaking to residents in Nairobi South Ward, the leaders highlighted data showing that many eligible young voters remain unregistered, raising concerns about their influence in upcoming elections.
Failure to register, they said, could weaken youth representation in leadership decisions. “Tumeona data inaonyesha kuwa kuna watu wengi sana wale tunaita Gen Z hawajaregister,” Chege said.
“Hawa vijana lazima wajue kuwa viongozi hachaguliwi kwa maandamano, wanachaguliwa kwa kura.”
The leaders emphasised that while demonstrations may draw attention to issues, real change comes through participating in elections. They encouraged young people to take advantage of the ongoing registration process and exercise their constitutional right to vote.
They also called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to expand and decentralise registration services, making them more accessible to residents in informal settlements and rapidly growing urban neighborhoods.
“We have asked IEBC to devolve the registration process to where people reside and even invest more resources so that no eligible voter is left out,” Chege added.
Alongside promoting youth engagement and women’s leadership, the UDA leaders voiced confidence in President William Ruto’s chances of winning a second term in 2027, citing visible development projects under the Kenya Kwanza administration as proof of progress.
Chege reaffirmed her commitment to the party and the President, stating that her political journey is tied to delivering on the promises made during her election campaign.
“I was elected on a UDA party ticket and that is why I am behind President Ruto,” she said.
“It is my duty to ensure that the manifesto we gave to the people is fulfilled. That is why I am still on this journey, to make sure it is implemented to the letter.”
Residents attending the forum said they were encouraged by the progress in infrastructure, social initiatives, and economic empowerment programs implemented under the current administration.
Many young people present also noted that the campaign motivated them to register, emphasising that electoral participation is the only effective way to influence policy and leadership.
The leaders said the sensitisation sessions will continue across the county to ensure more Kenyans, particularly youth, take part in voter registration and are prepared to exercise their rights in the 2027 elections.
