The Kenyan Embassy in Berlin has moved to clear the air over reports about diaspora voter registration, stating that the process has not yet started for Kenyans living in Germany.
In a statement issued on Friday, March 20, 2026, the Embassy urged Kenyans in Germany to ignore information circulating online suggesting the exercise was already ongoing, and instead wait for an official update.
The clarification follows numerous inquiries from Kenyans who had seen messages on social media and diaspora forums claiming that registration had begun.
The Embassy explained that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has not yet launched the voter registration exercise at the Berlin mission.
"The Embassy wishes to clarify that the IEBC has yet to initiate the voter registration exercise at the Embassy. We will communicate officially via our website and social media platforms once the details are confirmed by the IEBC and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs,” the Embassy stated.
The notice comes at a time when the IEBC is continuing with the continuous voter registration exercise within Kenya as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election. The exercise allows eligible citizens to register as voters, transfer their voting stations, or update their personal details at constituency offices.
However, for Kenyans living abroad, voter registration is only conducted when officially planned by the IEBC and announced in advance through embassies and consulates.
According to the IEBC, anyone seeking to register as a voter must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 years and above, and must have either a valid national identity card or a valid Kenyan passport.
At the same time, leaders and civic groups have been pushing for wider voter registration efforts, especially targeting young people and communities that have been left out in past exercises, as part of efforts to increase voter turnout in the next election.
The Embassy’s statement also points to rising interest among Kenyans living abroad who want to take part in national elections, highlighting the role of diplomatic missions in sharing clear and reliable information.
Kenyans in Germany have been advised to keep checking the Embassy’s official website and verified social media pages for updates on when the voter registration exercise will begin.
