Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat declared vacant following MP Johana Ng’eno’s death

The IEBC has already set May 14, 2026 as the date to conduct the by-election to replace Johanna Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash in Nandi.

The National Assembly has formally declared the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat vacant following the death of area Member of Parliament Joshua Kipyegon Ng’eno.

In an official notice issued on March 10, 2026, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that the vacancy arose as a result of the legislator’s death on February 28, 2026.

“Pursuant to the provisions of Articles 101 (4) (a) and 103 (1) (a) of the Constitution and section 16 (3) of the Elections Act, 2011, it is notified for general information of the public that the seat of the Member of the National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency… has become vacant as a result of the death of Hon. Joshua Kipyegon Ng’eno,” the notice read.

Ng’eno, who was elected under Article 97 (1) (a) of the Constitution to represent Emurua Dikirr Constituency, served as a member of the National Assembly until his passing.

The declaration of vacancy now sets in motion the constitutional and legal process required to fill the seat.

Under Kenyan law, a by-election is expected to be conducted within the timelines stipulated in the Constitution and the Elections Act, unless exceptional circumstances arise.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is mandated to organise and conduct the by-election to ensure residents of Emurua Dikirr Constituency are represented in Parliament.

With the seat now officially vacant, political activity in Emurua Dikirr is expected to intensify as parties and potential candidates begin preparations for the anticipated by-election.

The forthcoming electoral process will provide constituents an opportunity to elect a new representative to the National Assembly, restoring full representation for the constituency in legislative affairs.

The IEBC has already set May 14, 2026 as the date to conduct the by-election to replace Johanna Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash in Nandi.

He died alongside five others including the pilot.

Authorities are still probing the cause of the crash.
